Bottle corks are fasteners for all types of bottles. They are gas and waterproof. They are obtained from the natural resource cork oak, which can be harvested for the first time after 25 years. After this it is only possible around every 10 years to peel the bark. The majority of the world's cork is produced in portugal. Even in ancient greece there were already containers sealed with this natural product. In the middle ages oil bonded wood corks were used. These were wrapped with hemp. These had however the disadvantage of springing out of the bottle during the transport period. Therefore in 1680 a benedictine monk invented the cork stopper. This development was adopted by various champagne manufacturers during the second half of the 18th century. Towards the end of the 18th century the natural resource of cork gained more and more importance. Trade and economic relationships were expanded. Bottles of wine and other drinks were filled in increasing numbers and sealed with these corks. To begin with the cork was pushed through a cylindrical press, in order to pushed into the neck of the bottle. The press force would be removed and the cork would begin to take shape, until it had tightly sealed the bottle. Champagne corks an additional fastening is needed, due to the high pressure of the carbon dioxide parts. On average corks are 38mm long. Very high quality corks can cost the drink manufacturer up to a euro a piece.
