Thermoplastics are polymers that become soft or liquid above a certain temperature range. This property is due to the structure of largely linear polymer chains, which are not or hardly crosslinked by atomic bonds, but are only held together by intermolecular forces. When energy is supplied, these forces are cancelled out and the polymer chains can shift against each other so that the plastic can be shaped. Due to their plastic properties, thermoplastics can be processed particularly well; for example, they can be shaped into the desired shape using extrusion, thermoforming or injection moulding processes. The areas of application are manifold: Thermoplastics are used to produce a wide variety of everyday objects and are also the basis for the production of many technical components, for example in the electronics industry.The polyvinyl chloride, known in short as PVC, is one of the most frequently used thermoplastics, which is usually produced by a radical polymerization of the monomer vinyl chloride. The properties of polyvinyl chloride are adapted to the area of application by the use of additives such as plasticizers, stabilizers and dyes. PVC products are mainly used in the construction sector, for example in the form of window profiles, cable ducts, floor coverings or water pipes. PVC is also used for the production of packaging, furniture and vehicle parts, plastic adhesives and various consumer articles.
