The original letter opener was in the form of a knife, with however a blunter blade. The advantage in contrast to opening by hand or with a scissors is the envelope can be opened so that the content can be taken out undamaged. Also there is always the risk of paper cuts with the clumsy opening of an envelope with your hand.

Nowadays there are electronic letter openers with cutting or milling to open it. With cutting, there is the advantage that this can open thicker envelopes, however, it may happen that the content is damaged by the cutting edge. With milling, which easily mills the envelopes, this manages it gentler.

In medium and large industrial businesses automatic/electronic letter openers are used to save time, so that the internal mail is opened quickly. There are devices which are suitable for a volume of up to 100 letters, the next order of magnitude amounts to from 100 to 500 envelopes and for larger inbox there are also letter openers from 500 envelopes. As technologies for opening the slitting, cutting or milling is offered by these devices.
