La pression du gaz sur les deux cotés du piston est équivalente. Le gaz est compressible. Quand une pression externe suffisante est exercée sur la tige du piston dans la direction du cylindre, le piston compresse le gaz. En raison de la pénétration du piston dans le cylindre, la pression augmente. Quand la force extérieure diminue, le piston retourne à sa position initiale.
Ce vérin à gaz doit toujours être monté avec la tige dirigée vers le bas. Ainsi, le joint est continuellement lubrifié.
