Op basis van coatings bestaan optische spiegels uit diëlektrische spiegels en metalen spiegels. Een diëlektrische spiegel is een optische spiegel die bestaat uit dunne lagen diëlektrische coatinglagen die op een optisch substraat (UVFS of BK7) worden aangebracht. WISOPTIC biedt diëlektrische laserspiegels voor laserlijnen, voor smalbandige of breedbandige golflengtebereiken die het spectrum van UV tot IR bestrijken. Metallic spiegels zijn gecoat met beschermd goud, zilver of aluminium. Metalen spiegels worden veel gebruikt vanwege hun matige reflectieniveau over een zeer breed spectraal bereik. Beschermde goudcoatings hebben de hoogste reflectie in IR, beschermd zilver is het meest efficiënt in VIS, terwijl beschermd aluminium een economische reflector is over het gehele 300nm-IR bereik. De toplaag van diëlektrisch materiaal beschermt de metalen coatings en maakt metalen spiegels duurzaam en stabiel voor langdurig gebruik.
Optische spiegels kunnen ook worden gegroepeerd volgens vorm: sferisch, rechthoekig, elliptisch of aangepaste vormen met vlakke, sferische concave of convexe of cilindrische oppervlakken.
