Brown coal is a blackish-brown colous and is a fossil fuel which was formed from plant parts such as trees, bushes and ferns from over millions of years ago in the geological era of the Tertiary period.

Plants died, drowned in the swamp and decayed into peat. Over time, more and more peat was made, which sank deeper and deeper into the sea, where they were covered with rocks and mud.  Without air and through high pressure and high temperatures over the course of millions of years well below the earth's surface from the peat coal  bed, thus degradable layers of coal and ore developed.

First, brown coal formed, which became denser in the course of millions of years, so that out of it hard coal formed. If this was even denser anthracite occured that heats even better than coal.

Brown coal is usually encouraged for everyday use. Today it is used mostly as a fuel for generating electricity by burning or as a domestic fuel.  Since it contains a lot of water and relatively little carbon, its calorific value is relatively low.  Brown coal contributes to nuclear energy and renewable energy sources as a substantial part of security of supply: it covers approximately one quarter of primary energy consumption in Europe.
