Granite is formed by the solidification of rock melts, also called magma, within the mantle of the earth, at a depth of more than 2 km below the earth's surface. In most cases granite is not produced from the liquid material of the earth's mantle but from molten material from the much deeper regions of the lower earth's crust. In contrast to this are the volcanic rocks, where the magma penetrates to the earth's surface. Granite is therefore a deep rock (technical term: Plutonite). Rocks that solidify very close to the earth's surface (less than 2 km) are called sub-vulcanites, transition magmatites or impacted rocks. For the formation of magma chambers, periods of 10 - 15 million years or more must be expected.
