The term microbiology is derived from the ancient Greek terms μικρός, mikrós, the little one, from βίος, bíos life and λόγος, lógos, the teaching. Microbiology as a branch of biology is the science of microorganisms. It examines living beings that are not individually visible to the naked eye. These include such organisms as few microalgae, bacteria, fungi, protozoa (protozoa) and viruses. Today, microbiology is divided into different specialties. A distinction is made between medical microbiology, soil microbiology, geomicrobiology, food microbiology, marine biology and technical microbiology. Another criterion for falling below the different areas of this science is their consideration of different groups of microorganisms. In microbiology, methods of biochemistry, genentics, ecology, cytology are used as a science of cells and systematics. Microbiology is also used in biotechnology. Microorganisms are very well suited for genetic research because they have manageable genomes.The first research in the field of microbiology reached Antoni van Leeuwenhoek and Robert Hooke at the end of the 17th century with the discovery of microorganisms. They were the first to start building microscopes and were intensively involved in preparatory work for the construction of a light microscope. After 1850 Louis Pasteur in particular gained further important knowledge in the field of microbiology.
