Plasticizers are added to plastics to make them both softer and more flexible. In addition, plasticizers in plastics provide greater suppleness and elasticity. Plasticizers shift the thermoplastic range to lower temperatures. This gives the plastic a somewhat more elastic property. Plasticizers are among the most frequently sold chemicals worldwide. There are 2 types, the external and the internal plasticizers. The plasticizer diethylhexyl phthalate is added to both PVC and elastomers and is the most commonly used plasticizer. Mesamoll can be added with PVC instead of diethylhexyl phthalate. Hexamoll has been added to both plastic articles and children's toys made of PVC since 2006 to increase elasticity.In addition, Hexamoll is contained in various medical articles and in food packaging.Lemon-based plasticizers are for example citric acid triethyl esters. Although they are a little more expensive, they contain toxic substances only in very low doses.In internal plasticizers, the plasticizer bonds with the macromolecule and thus gives the plastic a long-lasting elasticity. An example of this is the plasticizer vinyl chloride, maleic acid, ethene or methyl vinyl ether. Plasticized PVC consists to about one third of a plasticizer.
