Leica Microsystems ontwikkelt en produceert microscopen en wetenschappelijke instrumenten voor de analyse van micro- en nanostructuren. De optische precisie van de instrumenten en de innovatieve technologie van het bedrijf worden wereldwijd gewaardeerd. Zij is marktleider op het gebied van klassieke lichtmicroscopie en stereomicroscopie, digitale microscopie, confocale microscopie en aanverwante beeldvormingssystemen, monstervoorbereiding voor elektronenmicroscopie en chirurgische microscopen. Het bedrijf, dat tegenwoordig wereldwijd actief is, werd in de 19e eeuw opgericht als familiebedrijf. De ondernemer Ernst Leitz I, die het bedrijf naar wereldfaam leidde, bedacht het leidende principe "met de gebruiker, voor de gebruiker", dat vandaag de dag nog steeds geldt voor Leica Microsystems. Ideeën van gebruikers overnemen en oplossingen ontwikkelen die aan hun behoeften voldoen - zo blijft het bedrijf nieuwe normen stellen in de markten die het bedient. Dit geldt ook voor andere diensten die Leica Microsystems haar klanten biedt: technische diensten, maar ook ondersteuning voor praktische toepassingen en alle aanverwante zaken. Leica Microsystems heeft wereldwijd zeven grote vestigingen en ontwikkelingscentra. Het bedrijf heeft vertegenwoordigers in meer dan 100 landen, verkoop- en servicebedrijven in 20 landen en een internationaal netwerk van distributiepartners. De onderneming heeft haar hoofdkantoor in Wetzlar, Duitsland.
