Rudolf Kiesewetter, die zijn naam gaf aan de Excelsiorfabriek Rudolf Kiesewetter in Leipzig, richtte in 1908 de eerste meetinstrumentenfabriek in Duitsland op. In 1942 werd de fabriek verwoest, maar na het einde van de oorlog met grote en onvermoeibare inzet weer opgebouwd.
De heer Kiesewetter overleed in 1958. In hetzelfde jaar werd het bedrijf een semi-overheidsbedrijf. In de voormalige DDR werd Kiesewetter de enige fabrikant van een reeks meettechnische producten. De belangrijkste producten waren schakelpaneelmeters en lichtmeters. Een andere focus lag op apparaten voor het bewaken, omzetten en registreren van elektrische en fysische grootheden

Met de hereniging van Duitsland werd Rudolf Kiesewetter Messtechnik GmbH herboren
