Many industries are gradually switching from steel to plastic strapping. This is mainly due to the following advantages that plastic strapping offers:

• No risk of corrosion
• Significant price advantages (up to 50% compared to steel strapping)
• Minimised risk of injury to people and packaged goods

Plastic strapping can be roughly divided into three categories:

• PET strapping
• PP strapping
• Polyester textile strapping

The following questions help to answer the question which type of strapping is the right one for the respective application:

• How often is strapping required?
• What strength is required?
• Does the volume of the packaged goods change?

The highest strength values can be achieved with PET and polyester textile strapping. If strapping is required frequently, PET strapping is preferable, as it can be processed very efficiently - with battery-operated strapping tools or fully automatic machines. For smaller quantities, the investment in these devices is usually not economical, so that textile strapping should be used here.
If only low strengths are required, PP strapping is often the best option - especially since very inexpensive strapping tools are already available here.
If the volume of the packaged goods changes, e.g. when wood dries or bulk goods settle, PP strapping is recommended due to its high elongation or, alternatively, textile strapping due to the possibility of re-tensioning the strap. For strongly expanding packages, such as foams or baling presses, straps with lower elongation are preferable.
