The rotary cooler to treatment of bulk materials is generally similar constructed to rotary dryer and like this powered by chains or gear rim/ pinion and mounted mostly of two bearing stations.
Like rotary dryer the cooler is furnished with corresponding components to realise an optimum material movement and –blending and so the optimum cooling.

Like the rotary dryers, they are equipped with appropriate internals in order to achieve optimum material movement and mixing and thus cooling. The cooling process can be significantly accelerated by injecting water. The heated exhaust air can be used as secondary air for other purposes. (Cold) ambient air mixes with the hot material in the ascending pipe and the air thus heated can in turn be used for other processes. Apart from the relatively small space requirement it is also advantageous that a vertical material transport, e.g. into a silo, which may be necessary when using a cyclone, can be omitted.
planetary coolers consist of 9 - 11 cooling tubes, which are arranged parallel to and evenly distributed around the circumference of the rotary kiln. The clinker flow is distributed into these cooling pipes. Intake elbows, refractory lined, are intended to ensure clinker transport into the cooler with as little dust turbulence and wear as possible without return to the kiln. The pipes are partially refractory lined and equipped with lifting or spreading vanes. Water can be injected to improve cooling.
