This gas is compressible. With sufficient external force on the piston rod, by pushing on the piston rod into direction of the cylinder, the piston will compress the gaz. Due to the intrusion of the shaft into the cylinder the gas pressure will rise. When the external force reduces, the pressure will return the piston into its original position.
Normally, the standard gas push springs should be mounted with rod pointing down, so the seal is lubricated for a maximum life. Other orientations are possible with an additional oil chamber

STAB-O-MAT is a spring-lockable gas spring that has been specially developed for infinitely variable and comfortable adjustment of the seat height in office swivel chairs, work chairs, armchairs, and stools.
Functionality
Swivel chairs with the STAB-O-MAT make working while sitting comfortable. Pleasantly cushioned, they can be continuously adjusted in height and gently cushion the weight of the person sitting.
This is made possible by the patented double pipe system, consisting of pressure and guide pipe. The self-supporting pressure tube is designed to allow the transmission of bending moments, for example, when the seat surface is not centrally loaded.
An additional variant of the STAB-O-MAT gas spring is the STAB-O-BLOC with a non-self-supporting pressure tube. The difference: An external support tube absorbs the bending moments. The gas pressure spring springs and cushions the seat and serves to adjust the height.
