An expansion valve, often also known as a throttle valve, is a device that reduces the pressure of the flowing liquid by narrowing a flow cross-section at a certain point to such an extent that an increase in volume (expansion) is caused. The expansion valve operates thermodynamically isenthalp. This means that the pressure reduction takes place without dissipation of work and thus also energy. Possible variants of an expansion valve can be regulated or unregulated versions, whereby for example a constriction of the pipeline (constriction is called throttle) represents an uncontrolled valve (use for example in the refrigerator). Controlled valves are more likely to be used in high-performance systems, whereby the cross-section and the associated pressure drop are controlled according to a suitable reference variable. An example of this would be the use in a refrigerating machine, whereby a constant temperature of the medium to be cooled is to be achieved by using the expansion valve.expansion valves are also used, for example, in modern fully automatic coffee machines.
