In the course of motorization at the beginning of the 20th century, the first attempts were made in which the vehicles were moved by circulating tracks mounted on both sides instead of wheels. These tracks consist of many movably connected chain links, which are driven by corresponding drive wheels. The advantage of tracked vehicles is that they can distribute the weight of the vehicle over a larger area due to the tracks taking up the entire length of the vehicle. Steering is done either by braking one of the two chains or by moving the two chains in the opposite direction. This means that the vehicle can even be turned around on the spot. Track vehicles are particularly suitable for vehicles with tyres (cars, trucks) where loose, slippery or particularly uneven surfaces are to be found. Whether in the snow, on construction sites or in open terrain - tracked vehicles cope with these situations with ease. The best known examples of tracked vehicles are certainly excavators, snow caterpillars and tanks.
