Snow chains belong to the winter equipment of motorized vehicles. They can be used as a replacement for winter tyres or as a reinforcement for winter tyres. They also help with the stability of vehicles in muddy terrain.You can distinguish two types of snow chains. On the one hand, they are available as fully-fledged snow chains that support driving and, on the other hand, are used as starting aids. They prevent the tyres from spinning when starting. They are only mounted on the wheels that are attached to the drive axle. The track chains, i.e. the"crawler tracks" are only mounted on the wheels on the steering axle. In the meantime, however, there are even combined chains that stabilize both when driving and when starting off. Before attaching such snow chains to your car, you should check whether the distance between the wheel housing and the wheel allows a snow chain. If the gap is too narrow, sheet metal damage may occur. When driving with snow chains, a maximum speed is set by law. In Germany this top speed is 50 km/h, just like in Switzerland and the Czech Republic. Lorries and buses that are on the road in a certain region and are not only on the road throughout Germany or Europe should normally be equipped with snow chains.The snow chains were patented by the American Harry D.
