Ethylene glycol, also known as glycol, 1, 2-ethylene glycol, referred to as EG. The chemical formula is (CH2OH) 2, which is the simplest diol. Ethylene glycol is a colorless, odorless and sweet liquid with low toxicity to animals. Ethylene glycol can be miscible with water and acetone, but its solubility in ethers is small. Used as solvent, antifreeze and raw material for synthesizing polyester fiber. Polyethylene glycol (PEG), a polymer of ethylene glycol, is a phase transfer catalyst and is also used for cell fusion.

It is mainly used for making polyester, polyester, polyester resin, hygroscopicant, plasticizer, surfactant, synthetic fiber, cosmetics, solvent for dyes, inks, etc., antifreeze agent for engine, gas dehydrating agent, resin manufacturing, and wetting agent for cellophane, fiber, leather and adhesive. It can produce synthetic resin PET, fiber grade PET, i.e. polyester fiber, and bottle grade PET for making mineral water bottles. It can also produce alkyd resin, glyoxal, etc., and also be used as antifreeze. Besides being used as antifreeze for automobiles, it is also used for conveying industrial cold energy, which is generally called refrigerant, and can also be used as condensant like water.
