In contrast to naturally grown natural fibres, man-made fibres are produced artificially. They consist of polymers, which are long chain molecules with repeating chain building blocks. Cellulosic man-made fibers are produced with the natural polymer cellulose, which is obtained from wood and converted into a spinnable mass using a chemical process. The polymers of a synthetic man-made fibre are produced in a chemical reaction, the raw material is usually crude oil. Chemical fibres are mainly used in the areas of clothing and home textiles, but also in technical fields such as the automotive industry, the building industry and medicine are possible applications. The different fibre types have different properties depending on structure and composition and are used according to requirements. By blending with other man-made fibres or natural fibres, certain fabric properties can also be achieved. The most important cellulosic synthetic fibre is viscose, a breathable and temperature-balancing fibre used for linings and light summer clothing. Nylon is a synthetic synthetic fibre made of polyamide. Nylon fibres are light, durable and elastic and are used, for example, in sportswear and tights. The most frequently produced synthetic synthetic fibre is polyester fibre, one of the most frequently used textile raw materials.
