Calcium chloride is a chemical substance composed of chlorine and calcium, and its chemical formula is CaCl2, which is slightly bitter. It is a typical ionic halide, which is white, hard fragments or particles at room temperature. Its common applications include brine used in refrigeration equipment, road ice melting agent and desiccant.

Industrial use
1. Used as a multi-purpose desiccant, such as drying nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide and other gases. Used as dehydrating agent in the production of alcohols, esters, ethers and acrylic resins. Calcium chloride aqueous solution is an important refrigerant for freezer and ice making, which can accelerate the hardening of concrete and increase the cold resistance of building mortar, and is an excellent building antifreeze. Used as antifogging agent for ports, dust collecting agent for roads and fire retardant for fabrics. Used as protective agent and refining agent for aluminum and magnesium metallurgy. It is a precipitant for the production of lake pigments. Used for deinking of waste paper processing. It is the raw material for producing calcium salt.

Desiccant
Granular anhydrous calcium chloride is often used as a desiccant to fill the drying tube, and giant algae (or seaweed ash) dried with calcium chloride can be used in soda production. Some household dehumidifiers use calcium chloride to absorb moisture in the air. Calcium chloride can also be used as desiccant or dehydrating agent for gas and organic liquid. Because calcium chloride is neutral, it can dry acidic or basic gases and organic liquids, and can also dry small quantities of gases such as nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, etc. in the laboratory. However, it cannot be used to dry ethanol and ammonia, because ethanol and ammonia will react with calcium chloride to form alcohol complex CaCl2 · 4C2H5OH and ammonia complex CaCl2 · 8NH3, respectively. Anhydrous calcium chloride can also be made into household products and used as air moisture absorbent. As a water absorbent, anhydrous calcium chloride has been approved by FDA for dressing first aid, and its function is to ensure the dryness of wounds.
Food
As a food ingredient, calcium chloride can play the role of multivalent chelating agent and curing agent. It has been approved by the European Union as a food additive, and E code is E509. It is considered by the US Food and Drug Administration as "generally recognized as safe" (abbreviated as GRAS). It is estimated that the daily intake of calcium chloride food additive is 160 to 345 mg per person.
