The topmost end of a building is a roof. This now consists of a roof covering or a roof sealing. For flat roofs a roof sealing is absolutely necessary, for pitched roofs it can be installed or not. If the roof pitch is very low, sealing is required, as is the case with flat roofs. A roof prevents the penetration of moisture in rain or snowfall. Roofs with a roof pitch are nowadays insulated against heat and cold in residential buildings, and moisture protection, i.e. waterproofing, is usually installed. For flat roofs, a waterproofing system must be installed, which can consist of different materials. Flat roofs are usually made of concrete. It is basically waterproof and airtight, but rainwater could damage the concrete for years. For this reason, waterproofing sheets of plastic or bitumen are laid on the concrete and glued together in a watertight manner. This is followed by a thick gravel layer to protect the geomembranes and as ballast. The structure of a flat roof could look like this. An adhesive bridge is placed on the concrete ceiling, which is airtight. The vapour barrier sticks to it and thermal insulation sticks over it again. This is protected from water from above by a cover and protective layer. A protective layer and ballast with round gravel must be applied.
