Underground buffer tanks for the storage of water are called cisterns. They serve as a central element in the regional water supply, especially in regions with irregular rainfall, since they can provide the population with a basic drinking water supply even in dry periods and when groundwater reserves are difficult to access.The first use of cisterns can be backdated to up to 7000 years, especially in Mediterranean areas. Characteristic for these first cisterns is a construction of simple masonry or large blocks of stone. To avoid contamination of the collected rainwater, the cisterns were closed with capstones. Modern cisterns usually consist of prefabricated concrete parts or plastic. In general, they offer a volume for the storage of 2 to 40 m³ of rainwater. Since the extraction of drinking water is usually not unproblematic due to pollution such as bird droppings and other impurities, cisterns in Germany are mainly used for the extraction of process water. The water obtained is mainly used for gardening or for the operation of toilets or washing machines, as even poorer quality rainwater can be used without hesitation. The same applies to the use as an extinguishing water storage tank, which shows that the practical application possibilities of modern cisterns are quite versatile.
