Tunnel construction refers to the planning, development and actual construction of a tunnel system as well as all associated steps and processes. In general, tunnels are artificial passages that provide a route for many different means of transport through difficult terrain such as mountains, waterways and others. In most cases, such a facility serves as a transport route in the broadest sense. This is the natural equivalent of a bridge. A tunnel has the special feature that, with the exception of entry and exit, it is completely closed. Extremely short tunnels are also called underpasses. These are mainly used in cities where two traffic routes intersect at different levels. In general, tunnels are built for rail vehicles, water vehicles, road vehicles and pedestrians.
