Handles, hinges, handwheels, clamp handles, knobs or clamping devices - all these are components which are needed virtually everywhere, in mechanical engineering as much as in laboratories, in plant equipment and in the transport sector. Components, many of which come from the Black Forest, directly off the high-rise shelves of the market leader: Otto Ganter GmbH & Co. KG.
Established in Furtwangen in 1894 as a small mechanical workshop, company founder Otto Ganter hit on the idea in 1912 to standardize operating elements - years before the German Industry Norm (DIN) came into being. An idea thriving and growing into a sustained model of success: today, the family-owned company in its fourth generation is present worldwide and keeps on growing. Over 400 people at the company‘s Black Forest headquarters permanently develop new elements, manufacture with ultimate precision and quality and ensure the fastest possible shipping. 85 percent of all orders leave our plant within 24 hours - a speed which sets standards. And with over 60,000 available variants, Ganter offers an unrivalled range and variety of standard parts.
What became known as the Ganter Standard after its launch 100 years ago eventually turned into an indispensable feature in many engineering and construction offices - and with it the Ganter catalogue, showing the entire range of products with all their characteristics on around 1,900 pages in the most recent 17th edition. The Ganter catalogue has long been a much sought-after manual which has successfully helped and accompanied generations of designers and developers. And - this being the digital age - all the data are also available online and can be loaded into all common CAD programs.
If, by any chance, there is a standard part that you need and cannot find in the extensive range of products, the people at Ganter will set to work to close the gap and develop a customized solution. This is also one part of the story which has made Ganter into what it is today: a successful player on the international stage.

In the European market, door hinges use the EN1935 standard
EN 1935:2002/AC:2003 is the core European standard for single-axis hinges for building doors and windows, which mainly regulates their performance, test methods and classification system.
1. Scope of application
Product type: Applicable to single-axis hinges (fixed pin type or lifting type), installed on the edge of doors and windows, with the rotation axis not exceeding 30 mm from the surface of the door or window leaf.
Weight limit: Maximum load-bearing capacity of doors is 160 kg, and maximum load-bearing capacity of windows is 60 kg.
Exclusions: Spring-assisted hinges (covered by EN 1158), multi-axis hinges and special-purpose hinges (such as multi-axis hinges for fire doors must comply with EN 16034).
2. Core performance requirements
Classification coding system (8-digit code) For example: 34x0x20x
Digit 1: Usage level (1-4, the larger the number, the more stringent the use environment);
Digit 2: Durability level (3/4/7);
Digit 4: Fire resistance (0/1);
Digit 6: Corrosion resistance (0-4);
Digit 7: Anti-theft (0/1).
Durability test
Grading standard:
Level 3: 10,000 cycles (only for light window hinges);
Level 4: 25,000 cycles (for light door and window hinges);
Level 7: 200,000 cycles (for medium and heavy door hinges).
Mechanical properties
Torque limit: In the durability test, the maximum allowable torque generated by the friction of the hinge must meet the standard to ensure smooth operation.
Static load and shear strength: Static tension and pressure tests are required to verify the structural stability under extreme conditions.
Fire performance
Grading standard:
Grade 0: Not applicable to fire/smoke doors;
Grade 1: Must pass EN 1634-1 test, applicable to fire door components (must be tested as a whole with the door).
Corrosion resistance
Grading standard: According to EN 1670:2007, it is divided into 5 levels (no requirements for level 0, extremely strong corrosion resistance for level 4, such as salt spray test for 480 hours).
Safety and anti-theft
Safety: All hinges must meet basic safety requirements (only level 1).
Anti-theft:
Grade 0: Not applicable to anti-theft doors;
Grade 1: Must pass anti-theft test (must be combined with the overall design evaluation of the door).
3.Application scenarios
General scenarios: Door and window hinges for residential, commercial buildings, and industrial sites, different levels are suitable for different usage frequencies and environments (such as high corrosion areas need to choose level 4 hinges).
Special scenario: Fire door hinges need to meet both EN 1935 and EN 1634-1 and be tested as a whole with the door to ensure fire resistance.
