Inverters, also called inverters, belong to the power converters and convert direct voltage into alternating voltage and direct current into alternating current. Depending on the type of circuit, single-phase or three-phase alternating current can be generated. There are two types of control, externally or grid-guided inverters are required for feeding direct current into an AC grid or vice versa. In the event of mains faults, they can switch off the system themselves and thus prevent overvoltage; to function, they draw a commutation reactive power and need a fixed alternating voltage in the given mains. Self-guided inverters convert DC voltage into AC voltage, but the reverse is also possible. In this case, no reference voltage from a mains is required, since the valves are switched on and off in a self-generated cycle, which is advantageous for setting up an island grid.Inverters are needed wherever there is only one DC voltage source, e.g. a car battery, but the electrical load requires an AC voltage. This also applies when DC voltage is to be fed into a three-phase or alternating current network. Inverters operated by third parties are used, for example, for the grid connection of photovoltaic systems, wind power plants and fuel cells, but also for energy recovery on two-quadrant grid converters. Self-powered inverters, on the other hand, are used for uninterruptible power supply in data centers, hospitals and power plants, as well as in mobile devices, mountain huts and weather stations.
