Hardly any other electronic component has changed our world as much as the transistor. Transistors can be found in almost all electrical and electronic devices today. The development of the computer without transistors would have been unthinkable.The transistor itself is nothing more than a small electronic switch with whose help small electrical control currents, larger currents can be switched or amplified. There are many different types of transistors for different purposes. The classic biplore transistor consists of three doped semiconductor layers. A distinction is made between the so-called n-layer and the p-layer. These layers are then used to form either npn or pnp transistors. By applying a small control current to the basic terminal, larger currents can be controlled between emitter and collector. By combining several transistors, a wide variety of circuits can be built up. In the so-called integrated circuits, a large number of transistors are vapor-deposited onto semiconductor plates, which allows a high degree of miniaturization to be achieved. In modern computers or laptop CPUs, several hundred million transistors are combined in the smallest of spaces.The transistor is also frequently used in power electronics. The main focus of these transistors is on high gain and not on miniaturization. Power transistors therefore often have a relatively large housing in order to process the corresponding electrical power. Examples for transistors are high frequency transistors, phototransistors or field effect transistors.
