We all need electricity in the form of electricity, and anyone who produces it from renewable energy sources is sure to receive public applause. Water, biomass, geothermal energy, wind and sun - these are the materials from which ecological dreams are forged. And everything seems reasonable and desirable in view of the finite reserves of oil, gas and coal and the risks of nuclear power, limited at most by three things: to conserve electricity consumption, to increase energy efficiency and to impose landscape and nature conservation limits on alternative energies. No computer, no telephone, no coffee machine, no cash register and no assembly line work without electricity. But how secure is the power supply? And how likely is the repetition of a day-long blackout like in Germany at the end of November 2005? But for reassurance: Germany is the European country with the highest security of supply: 22.9 minutes of downtime due to malfunctions (through the own fault of the electricity suppliers or through third-party fault) are compared with 59 minutes in France, 78 minutes in Great Britain and 91 minutes in Italy. In any case, the electricity suppliers in Germany are putting considerable effort into the maintenance of the supply network and thus into securing the electricity supply - even after the liberalisation of the electricity market, which is constantly crying out for further cost savings. There is a lot of work behind the self-evidence with which electricity comes out of the socket.
