Power generators are used to master special situations in the energy supply. Such a generator is often referred to as an emergency power generator. This has the task of ensuring the power supply in the event of a power failure. A current generator basically consists of a drive and an electric machine. The electric machine, usually a synchronous generator, is usually driven by an internal combustion engine. In the case of smaller devices, these are usually petrol engines. At higher outputs, they are diesel engines. The power of a current generator is given in kVA. This is the apparent power that the generator can provide. Ideally, the kVA can be converted one to one into kW. However, if inductive loads, such as motors, are operated on the generator, this is no longer the case. Electrical generators are used, for example, by auxiliary services such as the fire brigade or THW to repair storm damage. Energy suppliers also use power generators for maintenance work on the grid in order to continue to supply the switched-off power supplies. Generators are also used in nuclear power plants or other safety-relevant buildings to ensure grid-independent operation. In most cases, the generators are used with an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). This provides the energy from the power failure to the start up of the generator. When the generator is fully started up, it takes over the load.
