The power of the sun provides both light and heat free of charge and both can be used in many ways, for example to heat water with solar collectors or to generate electricity with solar cells (photovoltaics). Large-scale solar plants in the megawatt peak range (megawatt peak - unit of measurement for the output of solar plants) use the renewable energy of the sun for energy production; this is a clean and almost inexhaustible energy source, which should be tapped much more strongly in the coming decades. Overall, the sun holds many times the energy needed worldwide; only the technology needs to be further developed and applied in order to harness the enormous amount of solar power. Individual large-scale solar systems have a total output of over 1.0 MWp and can also be installed on the roofs of individual plants or public buildings, where they can make a significant contribution to their energy supply. The state subsidies ensure that the investment in a solar system pays for itself after approximately ten years.
