Groundwater
Groundwater is located below the surface of the earth and forms a water body in the cavities of the earth's crust. The movement of groundwater is determined solely or almost exclusively by the gravitational force and the resulting frictional forces. Groundwater flows and flows depending on the differences in the piezometer height of the cavities. This means that the dammed water is also part of the groundwater. Groundwater, however, does not include retained water, soil moisture or seepage water. The nature of the cavities depends on the geological quality of the subsoil. These are pores in clastic sediments and sedimentary rocks as in silt, sand or gravel. Other cavities result from crevices in such solid rocks as gneiss, granite, quartz or sandstone. Other cavities can also occur in limestone, for example, by solution. Depending on the nature of the cavities, a distinction is made between pore groundwater, groundwater gaps or karst groundwater. The groundwater is also part of the water cycle. Its dwell time varies. It can be only a few months or many millions of years. Especially old groundwater is also called fossil water. This type of groundwater occurs, for example, under the African Sahara. The Water Resources Act defines groundwater as underground water in direct contact with the soil.
