The chemical compound water (H²O) consists of the elements hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O). This natural resource is found on Earth in springs, lakes, rivers and seas. A distinction is made here between salt water and fresh water. Now one could say ok, water is enough there, we don't have to worry about this, but far from it. Since freshwater resources on earth account for only about 3%, water should be used sparingly. It is possible to use salt water, but desalination takes time and money. Water occurs in three aggregate states. The term water is chosen for the liquid state of aggregation, water is called ice if it is frozen in the solid state and as water vapour if water occurs in gaseous form, i.e. evaporates as for example in cooking.A further definition of water is made according to the type of its use. Drinking water, table water, ultrapure water, distilled water, industrial water, service water, waste water, rainwater, groundwater, etc. In industry, process water is used, for heating systems, process water is used and the waste water, for example from the household, is recycled in water treatment plants. Depending on the type of use, water should have a certain degree of purity which is prescribed in Germany.
