One of the traditional sources of nutrition is bread. It is baked from cereal flour, salt, water and for example yeast as a leavening agent. The ingredients are mixed, kneaded, molded or hot extruded together and the resulting dough is formed into a loaf. This is then baked in the oven. Depending on what kind of bread is being baked there are further ingredients in the dough. When onion bread, for example, dried onions are added to the dough. However potatoes, nuts, seeds or dried fruits can be in different bread variants. These are usually grated into the dough.

Brown bread, white bread and mixed bread are probably the best known types of baked bread. However toast, whole wheat bread and other varieties can also find their way to the dinner table depending on your preference.

Bread is one of the staple foods. The tougher exterior of the bread is called either crust or rind. The inside of the bread is called crumb. Hence the saying is: Who ever ate bread in bed once knows how crumbs scratch.
