Bread rolls are portioned dough products, which are clearly smaller than bread.
There are different types, depending on the region and manufacturer bread rolls are produced from white flour or wholemeal flour, also dough mixtures from different grains (such as wheat, rye, spelt) and flour types are common. The flavours are expanded by adding ingredients such as seeds, nuts, onions, bacon or raisins in or on the rolls, mainly there are salty variants, but sweet rolls are also available.
Bread rolls are either industrially produced in large bakeries with a huge machine park, or in the bakery of the local baker who pursues his craft in the early morning hours, so that the bread rolls are fresh on the table in the morning.
Bread rolls can be eaten for breakfast or just as a snack between meals. In most bakeries and butcher shops bread rolls with savoury toppings are available to buy.
In different regions there are different common names for bread rolls. In Bavaria they are called Semmeln or Weckerl, in Swabia Laible or Seilge, in Berlin Schrippen and in Hamburg Rundstücke.
