A heat accumulator is a device for storing thermal energy. Similarly, heat storage is the process of storing thermal energy. There are essentially three different types of heat accumulators. These are the tangible heat accumulators, the latent heat accumulators and the thermochemical heat accumulators. The latter are also called sorption stores. Basically, each type of memory has its specific properties and characteristics. The perceptible heat accumulator changes its perceptible temperature on the device during charging and discharging. The latent heat storage tank, on the other hand, does not change its tangible temperature, but the physical state of the heat storage medium. The thermochemical heat store stores heat by means of exothermic and endothermic reactions. Furthermore, a distinction can be made as to whether the heat storage tank in question is an aquifer storage tank installed directly into the ground or one of the usual heat storage tanks in tank design. This can also have a significant effect on the way in which heat is stored. The specific characteristics of the device are important data with regard to the mode of operation and the respective usability of the heat accumulator. This includes information on charging and discharging times, the storage cycles that can be carried out, the degree of utilization and the energy storage density. Furthermore, there are heat accumulators in the form of long-term and short-term accumulators, whereby the classification is based on the characteristic values.
