Pelletizing is a method that presses a raw material into a compact rod shape A multitude of raw materials are suitable for pressing it into the so-called pellets. The substrate must only be present in shredded or shredded form and have a maximum moisture content of 10% - 15%. First, the raw material is placed in a matrix. A matrix is nothing more than a metal ring with holes through which the substrate is pressed thanks to small press rollers, which are called rollers. As soon as the material leaves the matrix through the holes, it is shortened with a knife to the intended pellet length. Due to the high pressure during the pressing process, the material heats up to approx. 100°C. Lignin, a wood's own binder, is released due to the high heat. The volume of the shredded raw material is reduced to about five times as much by pelletizing.The raw materials for pellets include wood, animal feed, dried barley or plastic. After pelletizing fermentation residues, they can be used as fertilizer or fuel. After the process, the pressed material has a high energy content and a high nutrient content. Thanks to the volume reduction, storage life after pelleting is also greatly optimised.
