Cupolas are shaft furnaces. Various metals are melted in these. These furnace types are usually required for the production of cast iron. In design and function, this furnace variant resembles the blast furnace shape. However, unlike the blast furnace, the height is only around 10 metres. Furthermore, they do not reach the necessary ore melting temperatures. A wood fire is usually lit at the bottom of the stove. This is covered with coke. A variant which glows the coke with gas burners is also in use. Then the oven is filled alternately with layers of metal and coke. Due to the air blowing at the lower end, the cupola furnace reaches up to 1600°C.
