The word hygiene comes from ancient Greek and literally means health. In current usage, all measures to prevent infectious diseases such as disinfection or sterilization of medical equipment are summarized under this term. But even simple measures such as regular, thorough hand washing are among the basic principles of hygiene. Especially during the cold season in winter, many places call for the basic rules of hygiene to be observed so that cold and flu viruses cannot spread unhindered. Hygienic conditions must also always be taken into account in food production and preparation, as salmonella and other pathogens can otherwise multiply in the food. Hygiene is therefore not synonymous with cleanliness alone, but refers to the containment of invisible microorganisms that can cause all kinds of diseases. In this context, hospital hygiene in particular has repeatedly made the headlines - especially in hospitals there is often an increased risk of infection when hygiene deficiencies occur, which in extreme cases can even lead to the death of patients. However, by observing relatively simple principles that have been known for decades, such accidents can nowadays be prevented without problems.
