Ultrasound is the term used to describe all sound waves with frequencies above the human hearing range. This is the case at frequencies around 16 kHz and higher. For use, therefore, sound waves must be generated and, if necessary, resumed. Sound waves can also be described as tones, the respective frequency is the pitch. Just like other waves, ultrasound can be reflected and absorbed by the respective material, or even passes through it. For example, in gases, liquids and solids it can propagate as longitudinal wave. It is reflected or absorbed by obstacles. The best known field of application for ultrasound is in hospitals. Both in the examination of patients and, for example, in the treatment of kidney stones. Here, the different functions can be recognized in the best way. During the ultrasound examination, sound waves are emitted onto the tissue to be examined. Depending on the different material (blood, water, muscle cells) a reflection takes place. This is resumed and evaluated by a receiver. This results in a two-dimensional sectional image. In the treatment of kidney stones, the sound waves are concentrated at one point, the kidney stone. This procedure destroys the kidney stone. Other important areas of application include industry and transport. Ships determine the depth of the sea with ultrasound, also called sonar. In industry, ultrasound is used for welding and materials testing.
