Fiber ropes are ropes made up of many individual fibers. A wide variety of materials are often used in production. Nowadays synthetic fibres are the optimal material for rope production. Fibres can be made synthetically harder and more resilient than any known naturally occurring material could ever guarantee. In the past, hemp fibres were mostly used for rope production. Steel ropes are also often used for very large and heavy means of transport such as ships, as the production of synthetic fibres is more expensive. Basically, however, all ropes which consist of individual fibres have the same structure. Individual fibres are twisted together. This is repeated several times with different fibres until several thicker fibre strands are available. These are then swirled together again. The process is repeated until a rope of the desired thickness and tensile force is obtained. By twisting the individual fibres into each other, an enormous stability and load limit is achieved.
