Chip cards are understood as cards which are equipped with a micro chip and can be read by a computer system, on which different information and data can be saved. These chip cards are in the meantime used and applied in a varity of different sectors.

Probably one of the best known variaties of the chip card is the health insurance card. On this card, the name, address as well as the insurance number of the respective patient is saved. There is currently another card under development that also can even save special data such as blood tests and other medical results electronically .

Chip cards are also used in industry and in many other industries for acquiring work time. With smart cards - also known as time cards - an electronic system records the working hours of employees, thus allowing a precise calculation of work and overtime .

Even in hotels chip cards have been introduced. Instead of the formerly usual room key ,today in many German and international hotels chip cards are used so that the hotel guest can gain access to their room.
