Heat meters are mainly used in pre-distribution systems as line or area meters. However, heat meters are also used for recording consumption in low-temperature systems (e.g. underfloor heating) in which heat cost allocators are not suitable for recording for technical reasons. In so-called 'single-pipe systems' (supply of the radiators through a ring pipe in the screed), heat meters are the best solution for recording consumption: A calculator unit with the temperature sensors for flow and return as well as a volume measuring part (water meter), which reports the passing quantity of liquid to the calculator unit via a pulse line. The volume measuring part is always placed in the return line, since the temperature level is lower here. A rough distinction is made between two designs: compact meters: Here the calculator and the volume measuring part form a structural unit. This type is exclusively used for small meters for the residential sector. Compact meters are also available as measuring capsule meters. The size of the volume measuring part (nominal flow rate) depends on the line cross section to be measured, the calculator can be used for all meter sizes.
