Thermometers are devices that can be assigned to measurement technology. They are generally used to measure the temperature. Some of today's thermometers are still based on the principle of gravity and density change, as invented in 1592 by Galileo Galilei's Galileo thermometer. Today, a wide variety of thermometers are available. Basically, a distinction is made here according to their design and the sensor used. Contact thermometers, for example, require a thermal contact to the object to be measured. This group includes the expansion thermometer, such as the liquid thermometer and the bimetallic thermometer. They also include the clinical thermometer, which is mainly used to measure body temperature, and the bimetallic thermometer, which evaluates the different coefficients of expansion of two different metal plates attached to each other. Electronic thermometers measure the temperature using a semiconductor temperature sensor. For this purpose, for example, PTC resistors or sensor circuits are used. Further thermometer variants are the platinum resistance thermometer, the gas thermometer, which evaluates the temperature by means of pressure measurement. The steam pressure thermometer calculates the required value by the relationship between steam pressure and a liquid and the absolute temperature. The heating thermostatic valves and thermostatic mixing taps use a wax-filled wax element. Disadvantages of contact thermometers are the frequently occurring measuring errors. These often occur due to insufficient heat contact, or due to possible heat dissipation, which can be influenced by various disturbance factors. Radiation thermometers in turn measure the thermal radiation of an object. This group includes the Raman thermometer, which is based on Raman spectroscopy, the radiation or pyrometer, the low temperature pyrometer and the high temperature pyrometer. Thermal cameras offer a special case in temperature measurement. These provide two-dimensional images that reflect the temperature of the objects on them in a particular color. This technology is mainly used in technology and in the building industry.
