A water meter or water meter is a measuring device that measures how much water has flowed through it. Most water meters are installed between households and waterworks or other tap water suppliers. In this case, they measure the amount of water consumed. With this measurement the costs can be calculated exactly. To be able to use water meters, they must be calibrated. This ensures that the measurement can be carried out precisely so that no party (household and municipal utility) is cheated and receives a disadvantage. The calibration with date must be recorded on an appropriate stamp on the meter. The totalizer is mechanical and the water flow must be legally indicated in cubic meters. Water meters have existed for as long as households have their own water connections, since the middle of the 19th century. The first water meter that, like today's water meters, can directly display the amount of water used, was developed by Carl Wilhelm Siemens in 1851. They are available in a wide variety of designs and models, all of which should be equally accurate. Single-family houses usually have only one water meter. For apartment buildings this is different, some have one per apartment, for others the water consumption is calculated on the basis of the water meter for the whole house, according to the living space of the individual apartments.
