With a measuring computer certain data are determined and the user receives the results in the form of an evaluation via a monitor. These little helpers make it possible to carry out extensive measurement series and to obtain efficient results quickly. Depending on the device and requirements, the results can be displayed in numbers or in a diagram. It is also possible to combine several measurements to obtain an average value. Deutsche Bahn uses a measuring computer to determine the inaccuracy of rails. Especially with high-speed trains, even small deviations can have fatal consequences. Metal contracts or expands with temperature changes and stresses occur in the rails. With a measuring computer it is possible to look into the metal without destroying it. These deviations are recorded and evaluated on site. The measuring device is slowly pushed over the rail to be measured in a special frame by a worker. If the deviation from the normal value is too large, the position of the rail in question is marked. Later, track laying workers can straighten the faulty track section. If the rail in question cannot be repaired immediately, the result may be a speed limit for the trains and the passenger arrives late at his destination.
