Lambda sensors have become almost indispensable for effectively reducing exhaust gases. Several new vehicles often have at least two probes in use, checking each other and monitoring the catalytic converter. This is the only way to achieve further reductions in exhaust emissions.The lambda sensors ensure that an optimum air/fuel mixture is produced. Based on this process, the 3-way catalytic converter reduces the exhaust gas components. This reduces carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen by a maximum of 99 percent. Special planar lambda sensors make an important contribution to the environmental friendliness of the engines. Nowadays, they reach their operating temperature in a maximum of five seconds. The highest control quality is already achieved during the cold start phase.The core of the finger probe is a sensor ceramic in the form of a finger. A separate heater heats them, as a minimum temperature of 350 degrees Celsius must be reached for control operation. Planar lambda probes are a further development of the finger probes. It contains the measuring cell as well as the heater, so that a considerably faster operational readiness is available. The planar probe has a double-walled protective tube for its safety. The use of fully functional lambda sensors is worthwhile for drivers, as 15 percent fuel can be saved and thus more expensive catalytic converter damage can be avoided. They also offer better performance and easy compliance with strict emission limits.
