Platform scales are scales in which the sample is placed on a flat, horizontal surface for weighing. Platform scales are also called floor scales, as the weighing surface of this type of construction is often located close to the floor. They are typically used as checkweighers, recipe scales, weighing and counting scales, but also in control engineering applications. The weighing capacity of platform scales can range from a few grams to several hundred kilograms. They are available in non-calibratable and calibratable versions. Weight measurement in platform scales is usually carried out using high-precision, wear-free piezo elements arranged below the platform. The platform on which the sample is placed for weighing almost always consists of surface-finished stainless steel of grade V2A (for the food industry) or V4A (for industrial applications). The graduation, also called divisions, can range up to an accuracy of tenths of a gram for precision balances. An accuracy of approx. 2 grams is usual. Since the weighing plate of platform scales in the higher weighing range is located close to the floor, for ergonomic reasons the display for displaying the weight is uncoupled from the actual scale body and mounted on a table, a wall or a separate stand at a height that is easy for the scale operator to read. The use of a platform scale is also recommended for larger or bulky samples, as there is little probability that the display will be covered by parts of the object to be weighed in this design. During weighing, the sample may be considerably larger than the actual platform on which it rests. All you have to do is to ensure that the sample is in a stable position and cannot support itself in any other way, thus falsifying the result of the weighing process. For better operability, the display of a platform scale, which is often designed as a control unit at the same time, also contains the key for zeroing the scale and the tare key.
