Calibration of weighing instruments is required by law:

• Where, in trade, the price of goods is determined by weight
• In the production of medicines in pharmacies, and in analyses in medical and pharmaceutical laboratories
• For medical scales, if the scale is used for therapeutic purposes (e.g. in hospital or at the doctor's office)
• For official purposes
• For the manufacture of prepackages

The period of validity of the verification depends on the field of application of the balance:

• In general: 2 years
• Checkweighers (FPVO): 1 year
• Medical scales in hospitals: 4 years, except bed scales and medical floor scales (2 years)
• Baby scales: 4 years

The calibration of personal scales at doctors and alternative practitioners is unlimited, except after repairs with destruction of the calibration seal.
If a balance is to be verified, the initial verification must be carried out by the manufacturer. A subsequent initial calibration is not possible. During initial verification, the balance does not yet receive a "Verified to ..." sticker; this is only done during recalibration by the weights and measures office.
You can tell whether a balance has been verified by the following features on the balance's nameplate:

• CE marking with year of manufacture
• Black "M" in green box (see picture above)
• 4-digit number; this is the notified body, i.e. the identification number of the responsible weights and measures office
