Infusion solutions include water and electrolyte solutions. They are also called basic solutions. They consist of water and electrolytes. Some water and electrolyte solutions also contain carbohydrates. These are crystalloid isotonic solutions. They are injected to patients who have a fluid or electrolyte deficiency or who have often had vomiting or long-lasting diarrhoea, which has also caused them to lose a high amount of electrolytes. Water and electrolyte solutions also serve to keep vascular accesses open. However, they are not suitable for high blood loss, even if they have the same electrolyte composition as blood plasma. If 1 litre of blood were to be replaced by an infusion solution, 4 litres would be necessary. Another fact is that crystalloid solutions are present in the vessels only 20 minutes after infusion. Therefore, it makes sense to use these solutions only in cases of low to moderate blood loss for a short period of time.
