Legionella are bacteria living in water. Their concentration is usually so low in the rather cool climate of Central Europe that they cannot pose a threat to human health. However, if our drinking water is heated to temperatures between 30 and 50 °C, the Legionella contained in it can multiply abruptly. They can be inhaled via the finest water droplets - so-called aerosols - during showers, for example, and can cause illnesses depending on their constitution and specific conditions. Besides the relatively harmless, flu-like Pontiac fever, an uptake of Legionella by drinking water can lead to Legionellosis, better known as Legionnaire's disease.In Germany, the headlines repeatedly report outbreaks of Legionella (pneumonia caused by Legionella). The Federal Environment Agency estimates at least 20,000 to 32,000 cases per year, of which up to 15% are fatal. Hospitals, hotels, sports facilities, but also residential complexes can be affected. In the Second Ordinance amending the Drinking Water Ordinance for property managers and property owners, the legislator prescribes regular drinking water samples and an obligation to report an increased concentration of Legionella. The critical value of measures is 100 Legionella per 100 milliliters of drinking water. If it is exceeded, affected house owners and property management companies are obliged to carry out a drinking water hazard analysis. Then legionella control by a specialist company is urgently required.
