Applications of Ultrasonics
Ultrasonic applications are the use of mechanical vibrations above the audible sound. These vibrations occur when an alternating current is applied to a piezoelectric material and this then expands or contracts. The ultrasound can be used in many different areas. For example, in industry for material testing or in shipping, as echo sounder. The most well-known field of application, however, is medicine. Here the ultrasonic application can be used for diagnostics. Once during pregnancy, where the size, sex, but also various misdevelopments of the embryo can be detected. Ultrasound is also used to examine various internal organs, such as the kidneys, heart or lungs, to detect diseases, injuries or tumours. Another area of medicine where ultrasound applications play an important role is physiotherapy. A good example of this is supination trauma, also known as "twisting of the foot". A therapist then uses ultrasound waves to treat the area of the external ankle. These support the removal of lymph fluid, which causes the ankle to swell, and increase blood circulation, which accelerates the body's own healing process.Ultrasound is also widely used in industry and technology, e.g. in the space industry for producing extremely smooth surfaces, for measuring depths and seabed examinations from the watercraft as sonar or sonar.
